Pizza And Beer: The Classic Combination
Thursday, April 8th, 2021

There are many great combinations of food and drink out there, but one of the most popular is pizza and beer. There are so many options of both pizzas and beers that you can choose from, so you really can’t go wrong (unless you just hate beer and pizza, then we might begin to wonder, just sayin’).
Why does this combo taste so delicious?
Some people think that pizza and beer are simple and familiar, so they go well together for a relaxing evening. Others think they taste the best in a social setting. But, a more science-related answer would be that beer and pizza enhance each other’s flavors. This is the same concept as pairing wines with certain foods.
Ales and pilsners have been the most popular beers throughout much of United States history. But, these often aren’t the best to pair with more uniquely flavored pies. Here are a couple of ways you can combine this beverage and pizza for a delicious meal.
- If you love pizza with more substance, try it with a heavier beer like a stout or porter. These pair well with meaty pies, as do IPA’s, which won’t fill you up as much as thicker beers.
- Lighter pies, like classic white pies and Margherita pizza, taste great paired with sour beers, pilsners, and ales. These enhance and contrast the flavors of crisp veggies and chicken.
Pizza and beer can be healthy (really!)
Almost everyone knows that wine has the ability to reduce the risk of heart disease by 31%, but did you know beer can too? This is because of the antioxidants in the drink, more specifically in dark beers. They improve circulation and blood flow. Beer has also been known to help maintain cognitive function by 20%, as long as you don’t drink too much, of course.
Pizza can also be healthy, with most of the benefits coming from lycopene. This is an antioxidant present in tomatoes. It can reduce the risk of certain cancers, as well as help reduce the risk of heart disease. It may seem like you should just eat more tomatoes, but consuming cooked tomatoes (like pizza sauce) can help you absorb the antioxidant more easily. The oil and fats (in small amounts) can also help you absorb the lycopene.
